But why is there this widespread attraction to dolls in Japan? And why<br />

do women choose to represent themselves as doll-like <strong>Lolita</strong>? What does the<br />

Cult of the <strong>Lolita</strong> mean? And what is the significance? <strong>The</strong>se questions will<br />

be addressed in the following chapters, the emphasis of this thesis, which is,<br />

essentially, a critique of the Japanese <strong>Lolita</strong> subculture and an analysis of the<br />

psychology and motivations behind it.<br />
