According to Tamiko Yamakawa, “traditionally most women married at<br />

least once. It was taken for granted that women married at a marriageable<br />

age and raised children. But starting in the mid-eighties marriage became just<br />

one of the alternatives for women”. 154<br />

<strong>The</strong> average age for giving birth to a first child has also increased with<br />

the most common age group rising for the first time to thirty-to-thirty-four<br />

years, and the average age for first-time mothers to age twenty nine in 2007<br />
