both this literature review and in my text in regard to certain respected<br />

theorists who have written on fashion, androgyny and subculture, whom I<br />

intend to acknowledge beyond the scope of this project.<br />

Finally, in regard to Subcultural and Post-Subcultural <strong>The</strong>ory, other<br />

well-established fields of enquiry, I cite only those earlier subcultural<br />

theorists who I believe are relevant in providing evidence to support this<br />

thesis, especially in consideration of their commentary on the position of<br />

girls within models of subculture, namely Dick Hebdige; McRobbie and<br />

Garber; and Nayak and Kehily. On youth culture in Japan (outside the<br />

discourse on G&L), I also discuss Gordon Mathews and Bruce Whites’<br />

findings.<br />
