ForewordPreâmbuloThe Portuguese Society of Occupational Safety andHealth organises, in 5 and 6th February 2009, the5th edition of the International Symposium onOccupational Safety and Hygiene – SHO 2009. Likethe recent previous editions, the event takes placein the Auditorium of the School of Engineering of theUniversity of Minho, in Guimarães.This year’s edition includes the subjects ofErgonomics and Physical Environment, Chemicaland Biological Risks, Fire Prevention, PreventionManagement and Construction Safety.During the event, parallel sessions will also occurfocusing in these subjects.This year, and beyond the Portuguese participants,papers were also submitted from Brazil, Ireland,Sweden and Italy. It should also be highlighted theorganisation of a round table concerning “Reflexionsabout the National Strategy for the OccupationalHealth and Safety.We would like to thank the participation of national andinternational experts who kindly accepted ourinvitation. We also thank the institutional support ofEngineering School of University of Minho,Engineering Faculty of University of Porto, HumanKinetics Faculty of Technical University of Lisbon andPolytechnic University of Catalonia, as well as thescientific support of the European Network of Safetyand Health Professional Organisations (ENSHPO),International Social Security Association (ISSA/AISS),Latin-American Association of Occupational SafetyEngineers (ALAEST), Spanish Association of Expertson Prevention and Occupational Health (AEPSAL),Brazilian Association of Civil Engineers (ABENC),Portuguese Society of Occupational Medicine (SPMT),Portuguese Ergonomics Association (APERGO),Portuguese Acoustical Society (SPA) and PortugueseSociety of Environmental Health (SPSA).We are also thankful for the official support of thePortuguese Authority for the Working Conditions(ACT) and European Agency for Safety and Healthat Work, as well as the valuable contribution ofseveral companies and institutions, mentioned inthe cover of this proceedings book.We are sure about the wide and engagedparticipation of all in this event and wish that it mayhave an increasing relevance in this particularprofessional and scientific domain, both at anational and international level.A Sociedade Portuguesa de Segurança e HigieneOcupacionais realiza, em 5 e 6 de Fevereiro de2009, a 5ª edição do Colóquio Internacional deSegurança e Higiene Ocupacionais - SHO 2009.
