Acaracterização da capacidade de trabalho fez-se através do Índice de Capacidade de Trabalho (ICT) [1] ea do nível de exposição a factores da carga física no manuseamento de doentes através do índice MAPO[2]. O estudo foi realizado em 14 serviços de internamento de um hospital central de Lisboa, com umaamostra de 238 enfermeiros. O modelo de regressão linear múltipla permitiu identificar as variáveis idade,ocorrência de lombalgia aguda e género como preditoras do ICT. O aumento da idade e a presença delombalgia aguda contribuem para que os valores do ICT diminuam e o género masculino para queaumentem.Palavras-chave: idade, envelhecimento, capacidade de trabalho, enfermeiros, ergonomiaAGE AND WORK ABILITY IN NURSESABSTRACTThis study has focused on the work ability development considering age and exposure to physicalworkload in nurses, having as main objective the understanding of the relationship between work ability,age and exposure to physical load during patient handling tasks at a central hospital. The characterizationof the work ability was carried out through the use of the Portuguese version of Work Ability Index (WAI)[1] and the exposure to physical load factors during patient handling tasks through the use of the MAPOindex [2]. The study was conducted in 14 hospital wards of a central hospital in Lisbon, involving a sampleof 238 nurses. The used multiple linear regression model identified the variables age, occurrence of acutelow back pain and gender as predictors of WAI. The increasing age and the presence of acute low backpain contribute to the decrease on the WAI values and the masculine gender to its increasing.Keywords: age, WAI, MAPO index, work ability, nurses, ergonomics30
