This talk will present empirical evidence on how supply chain
disruptions affect shareholder value and profitability and how these
performance metrics are influenced by various firm characteristics. It
will discuss trends that increase the chances of supply chain
disruptions, why firms often do not pay attention to the possibility of
disruptions, and what firms can do to mitigate the negative
consequences of disruptions. The talk will use the evidence of the
performance effects of supply chain disruptions to discuss the need
and importance of empirical research for the field of Operations
Management and Operations Research, and why empirical research
can enhance the relevance and applicability of analytical and modeling
research for practitioners and students. It will describe how
researchers can use empirical methods from economics and finance to
address issues in Operations Management and Operations Research.
