This study is a part of larger case study for a specific national market
that examines how the order fulfillment system behaves under
different operating policies. In this study the effect of establishing a
Vehicle Holding Compound (VHC) and the optimal operating policies a
VHC are studied. The development of a simulation model that
captures the structure, logic and characteristics of a specific national
market with and without a VHC is described. The results and insights
from the simulation study are presented. Finally, the challenges that
arise in parameterizing, calibrating and validating a large scale model
of this type are discussed.
