Effect of Goal Orientation on Learning and Performance:
Managing a Dynamic Problem When There is no Information
Can Sücüllü, Hakan Yasarcan
Bogazici University, Istanbul
Simulation games are widely used in training and education because
they are risk-free and they enable rapid accumulation of experience.
In addition to these, their interactive nature motivates people being
trained by them. In this work, we will first develop a simulation game
that will be used as a platform for experimentation. Later, we will
recruit subjects and ask them to play the game for several times. We
will give them different goals; the goal for the test group is "to learn"
and the goal for the control group is "to perform". We aim to
understand the effect of goal orientation on learning in general and on
the effectiveness of simulation games as a learning tool in particular.
No contextual information will be provided to the participants before
or during the game. In this way, we hope to eliminate the effect of
past conditioning of the participants on the performance scores. The
two groups will receive exactly the same task for many runs, so that
the performances would be comparable. In the end, they will also
receive a slightly different version of the task. This will help us to
measure “near transfer”, which is an effective indicator of learning.
Dynamics of Glucose-Insulin Regulation: Insulin Injection
Regime for Patients with Diabetes Type 1
Canan Herdem, Hakan Yasarcan
Bogazici University, Istanbul
Diabetes Mellitus is a disease associated with body insulin deficiency
or inefficient use of it. A patient with diabetes either cannot produce
insulin to absorb glucose and turn it into energy or cannot properly
respond to insulin.
