This paper presents a hybrid differential evolution (DE) technique for
solving the parallel machine makespan minimization problem with
sequence dependent setup times. DE is an evolutionary optimization
method to solve continuous optimization problems. To the best of our
knowledge, this is the first attempt to use a DE heuristic for the
concerned problem. Firstly, vector group encoding technique is
adopted from genetic algorithms to represent the individuals in DE.
Secondly, to make DE suitable for solving scheduling problems, the
Largest-Order-Value rule is used to convert the continuous values of
individuals in DE to job permutations. Thirdly, an efficient local search
procedure is applied to emphasize exploitation after the DE based
exploration. In addition, the performance of DE is enhanced by
employing a population initialization scheme based on a constructive
heuristic. Finally, a computational study is conducted to demonstrate
that the proposed technique is capable of producing encouraging
solutions.
