Politically, globalization and geographical mobility are focused as an instrument to
help Europe to be the most dynamic and competitive, knowledge-based economy
in the world. The European Commission has launched the Europe 2020 strategy,
of which one goal is about education of high quality and greater mobility.
This master project is intended as a contribution to the development of guidance
for the exchange and mobility in vocational education. It contains an empirical
study whose theory is grounded in the hermeneutic tradition. Using two
questionnaire surveys and a focus group interview, I studied the reflections of the
students at the basic level taking part in foreign exchange.
The study has shown that dialogue, putting into perspective, information and
encouragement are important themes in support of young people’s decision
making the relationship and interaction with stakeholders are the basis together
with the community.
Large variations are seen in students' acquisition of personal competences:
changing, learning, relationship and skills. All 4 students had in their own way a
good outcome. All students have gained an international interest and are ready to
repeat a stay abroad. Through the investigation, it turns out that the students
create some close relationships with the counselors and the mates from their
preparatory class, it is in the class their international interests are discussed.
As dissemination, I suggest that the individual counseling offers:
- An early individual counseling interview
- Open invitation for individual interviews
- Guidance on the distance during the exchange
To counsel in community offers:
- Working with students to develop a framework for content in the counseling
- Proposals to be discussed
- Activity based content eg own descriptions with pictures or video
recordings, for companies
- Presentation of the surroundings such as the Danish education
- General issues based on students' wishes
I can conclude that the exchange has had the intended effect: to contribute to
increased interest in international activities for students in vocational education.
Survey results will be included in the development of 2 projects funded by the
Ministry of Education in Denmark and the European Union with an intention to
contribute to the discussion of exchange for vocational students.
The development of practices is to develop a framework for evaluation and capture
of gather knowledge and experience, the first step will be to work through and
improve the questionnaire in relation to its end user, students and foreign partners.
Then it would be interesting to look at the development of focus group interviews
as a method to group and community.
