In case you didn’t get the allusion to was talking before there is a simple fact that no
small system can withstand contact with a big system without being fundamentally
changed by it (Fig. 9). We have the network in internet and we have our businesses.
Once a Microsoft developer came up to me and said, there used to be our biggest
customers were enterprises, now our biggest customers are websites. This is the
whole content of my website is larger than your enterprise. Most of these models
have been proven out at scales that are fought within businesses. They used to be
concernable. Can we use these very simple almost toy models? They have some very
special aspects to them. Can we really use them in the enterprise? The answer is
‘yes‘. What makes 21st century business go? I am trying to present evidence for
almost all of this for the rest of my talk.
This is what we know of so far. This is what is different about how we create value.
The first one is something we haven’t optimised for really in the past. We haven’t
thought about. This is the concept of network effects. I’ll explain exactely what that
is in a moment.
Peer production: we used to do everything ourselves. We used to centrally produce.
But we have now shifted to this model as happened to many industries, entire
industries now. The software world has shifted to peer production. This is open
