The motivations are clear why people are doing it. I pull this list of motivations here
from all the case studies that I saw (Fig. 17). The primary reason we saw was
innovation. Most companies are saying we are doing this to innovate. That may be
the case but innovations are extremely hard to measure. The other reasons were
better knowledge retention, improved expertise location, faster information
discovery – because everything is much more public – modernizing the workplace,
improving collaboration between different departments and different silos in your
organization, better cross-pollination of ideas, better idea flow, better productivity.
Productivity is one of the most consistent reports I see, very surprising. Years ago I
thought that with primarily better forms of collaboration we wouldn’t get actually
measurable productivity improvements. We do see that consistently. And more
transparency is the other reason why people do this decided this year‘s and last
year‘s case studies.
