A trigonal centre is found in the ThSi 2 lattice.A similar structure 16 is formed
when a tritopic tricyano derivative 15 is connected with trigonal-bipyramidal
Ag I (AgOTf; Tf=CF 3SO 2) centres (Fig. 3) [41].
The large channels generated, ~15 Å in 15◊AgOTf and at least 10 Å for the
free space (i.e. distance between van der Waals surfaces of porphyrins facing
each other) in 3 ◊ CuBF 4, are filled with solvent molecules and counter anions.
It is not surprising that there is topological similarity in general between
packing patterns of symmetric organic molecules and inorganic crystal structures.
For example, 1,3,5,7-tetrahydroxyadamantane has four OH groups, each
acting as a hydrogen-bond donor as well as an acceptor; the molecule as a
whole behaves as an 8-connector and its crystal structure is topologically related
to CsCl [42].
Layered 2D Nets
The channel is an important structural motif through which included guests
may move. While, as noted above, porous 3D nets have a channel-like continui-
