engaged <strong>in</strong> two symmetrical si<strong>de</strong> rows of tricoord<strong>in</strong>ated zigzag hydrogen bond<br />

patterns which flank opposite si<strong>de</strong>s of the central octagonal staircase core. The<br />

crystal structure of the 1:1 complex 26 of enantiomerically pure (1R,2R)-1,2diam<strong>in</strong>ocyclohexane<br />

24 and (1S,2S)-diol 23 is pleas<strong>in</strong>gly predictable and similar<br />

to that of 25. It shows virtually i<strong>de</strong>ntical pleated cores and si<strong>de</strong> rows of hydrogen<br />

bonds between alternat<strong>in</strong>g oxygen and nitrogen atoms (Fig. 1b). The relative<br />

sense of H-donation <strong>in</strong> the core is opposed to that <strong>in</strong> the si<strong>de</strong> rows <strong>in</strong> both 25 and<br />
