The theme of the article thus far has been the presence of repeat<strong>in</strong>g patterns <strong>in</strong><br />

crystal structures and their i<strong>de</strong>ntification. Even though a complete and general<br />

connection between molecular and crystal structure has proved to be elusive, it<br />

is seen that certa<strong>in</strong> patterns may be associated with specific functional groups.<br />

Carboxyl groups tend to form dimers, phenols form catemeric cha<strong>in</strong>s, aromatic<br />

r<strong>in</strong>gs form herr<strong>in</strong>gbone patterns and so on. Known patterns can then associate<br />

<strong>in</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>ct ways, lead<strong>in</strong>g to the phenomenon of polymorphism.<br />

More <strong>in</strong>trigu<strong>in</strong>g are cases where the pattern i<strong>de</strong>ntification itself is difficult.<br />
