This chapter reviews <strong>the</strong> recommendations of <strong>the</strong> most recent planetary decadal survey, <strong>and</strong><br />

summarizes some of <strong>the</strong> most excit<strong>in</strong>g recent scientific achievements. The chapter concludes with a<br />

discussion of <strong>the</strong> organization of this report, articulat<strong>in</strong>g how this <strong>and</strong> subsequent chapters relate to <strong>the</strong><br />

committee’s statement of task (Appendix A).<br />
