Large<br />

Non-Mars Mission Priorities <strong>in</strong> 2002<br />

Europa Geophysical Explorer was <strong>the</strong> only large mission identified: a spacecraft to orbit Europa<br />

<strong>and</strong> determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>and</strong> depth of <strong>the</strong> subsurface ocean postulated to exist beneath Europa’s ice shell.<br />

Although much plann<strong>in</strong>g has occurred, <strong>the</strong> mission has not been <strong>in</strong>itiated. Current ef<strong>for</strong>ts focus on<br />

implement<strong>in</strong>g this mission <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context of a jo<strong>in</strong>t NASA-ESA Europa Jupiter <strong>System</strong> Mission (Chapters<br />

8 <strong>and</strong> 9).<br />
