SURVIVAL, EVASION, AND RECOVERY
6-89. Survival and evasion are processes whereby Soldiers isolated in hostile or unfriendly territory avoid
capture and return to areas under friendly control. Personnel recovery is the return of such evaders to
friendly control, with or without aid, as the result of plans, operations, and individual actions by recovery
planners, conventional or unconventional forces, and sometimes the evaders themselves. Evasion is
considered the highest form of resistance. Both evasion and recovery are integral to military operations.
6-90. Personnel assigned to reconnaissance units are considered high-risk-of-capture and subject to
isolation in hostile territory. Therefore, they should prepare for the possibility of being in an evasion
situation. Successful evasion is dependent on detailed planning, as well as peacetime training and
proficiency in survival and evasion and recovery tactics, techniques and procedures. The DRT commander
must ensure his units are trained on evasion techniques. He must also be prepared to initiate personnel
recovery operations if necessary. (See FM 3-50.3 and FM 3-50.1 for detailed information on survival,
evasion, and personnel recovery.)
