Reconnaissance Operations
3-59. The tasks accomplished as part of an area reconnaissance are basically the same as those for a zone
reconnaissance, though the scope of tasks will differ. In addition, an area reconnaissance is normally
conducted on a smaller scale than a zone reconnaissance.
3-60. As with the zone reconnaissance, the DRT commander ensures that the troop has all known
information and intelligence pertaining to the AO. The reconnaissance squadron may designate troop
infiltration lanes. The troop commander determines the infiltration method and sequence. At times, the
commander may be required to identify the infiltration lanes. If so, he conducts reconnaissance during his
troop-leading procedures to identify and select infiltration lanes. He coordinates for support from other
collection assets available to the squadron or IBCT to assist with this reconnaissance. Information from
signal intelligence and imagery intelligence can assist the DRT commander in developing and completing
his scheme of maneuver during troop-leading procedures. He uses imagery intelligence, along with a
detailed map reconnaissance, in determining how terrain supports movement. The commander views the
terrain not only from the perspective of how it supports his mission success, but also from the enemy’s
perspective. He should focus measurement and signature intelligence assets on restricted terrain or highspeed
avenues of approach to provide early warning of potential enemy movements. Small unmanned
aircraft systems can support infiltration and reconnaissance to provide early warning and reconnaissance of
