Command and Control<br />

2-39. Ideally, the squadron headquarters issues at least three WARNOs to the subordinate troops when<br />

conducting the MDMP. The troop commander should know what is contained in each WARNO, because it<br />

will be the basis for his WARNOs and his TLP. The three WARNOs are issued:<br />

WARNO No. 1: Upon receipt of mission.<br />

WARNO No. 2: Completion of mission analysis.<br />

WARNO No. 3: When the commander approves a COA.<br />

2-40. However, the number of WARNOs is not fixed. Warning orders serve a function in planning similar<br />

to that of FRAGOs during execution. Commanders may issue a WARNO whenever they need to<br />

disseminate additional planning information or initiate necessary preparatory action, such as movement or<br />

reconnaissance.<br />

2-41. The first WARNO (WARNO No. 1) normally contains minimal information. It alerts the troop<br />

commander that a new mission is pending. Warning order No. 1 normally contains the following<br />

information:<br />

The type of operation.<br />

The general location of the operation.<br />

The initial operational time line.<br />

Any movements to initiate.<br />

Any collaborative planning sessions directed by the commander.<br />

<strong>Reconnaissance</strong> and security plan and graphics.<br />

Initial information requirements or CCIR.<br />

2-42. Warning order No. 2 is issued at the end of mission analysis and contains essential information for<br />

planning and directives to initiate movements and reconnaissance if reconnaissance pull is required by the<br />

IBCT. (See Chapter 3, <strong>Reconnaissance</strong> Operations, for discussion of reconnaissance pull and push.)<br />

Typically it includes:<br />

The approved unit mission statement.<br />

The commander’s intent.<br />

Task organization changes.<br />

The unit AO (sketch, overlay, or some other description).<br />

The CCIR and essential elements of friendly information (EEFI).<br />

Risk guidance.<br />

<strong>Reconnaissance</strong> instructions.<br />

<strong>Reconnaissance</strong> planning guidance.<br />

Initial movement instructions.<br />

Security operations.<br />

Military deception guidance.<br />

Mobility, countermobility, and survivability (M/CM/S) guidance.<br />

Specific priorities.<br />

The updated operational time line.<br />

Guidance on collaborative events and rehearsals.<br />

2-43. Warning order No. 3 is issued after COA approval and normally contains:<br />

Mission.<br />

Commander’s intent.<br />

Updated CCIR and EEFI.<br />

<strong>Reconnaissance</strong> pull or reconnaissance push tasks (see Chapter 3).<br />

Concept of operations.<br />

Principal tasks assigned to subordinate units.<br />

Preparation and rehearsal instructions not included in SOPs.<br />

Final time line for the operations.<br />
