AREA SECURITY MISSIONS
Stability Operations
5-21. The troop may be tasked to conduct an area security mission as part of stability operations. Most area
security missions are focused on securing the local population. The focus may be on the population centers
in the DRT AOs and establishing a secure environment for the population. The same urban centers will also
be the focus of the enemy to counter the Army and host nation presence and to influence the local
population.
5-22. The following are area security-related tasks that the DRT conducts during stability operations:
Liaison/negotiation.
Joint military and/or civilian commission meetings.
Compliance inspections.
Support presence operations.
Tactical questioning.
Local security.
Fixed site security.
High-value target security.
5-23. The DRT commander considers the following when establishing local area security in a stability
operation:
Establishing and defending combat outposts and overt observation points.
Rotating one platoon that conducts security operations while the other platoon provides combat
outpost security, convoy escort, and QRF. The platoons rotate on a random schedule.
Using the mortar section to support the QRF or attaching it to a platoon unless mortar firing
missions are to be expected.
Requesting tactical vehicle augmentation.
Requesting Army aviation support to deliver patrols to outer areas of the AO where they can
patrol back to the combat outpost.
Establishing checkpoints and roadblocks.
Conducting patrols. Patrols can accomplish the following:
Gathering information on the threat, on the terrain, or on the populace.
Regaining contact with the threat or with adjacent friendly forces.
Engaging the threat in combat to destroy them or inflict losses.
Reassuring or gaining the trust of a local population.
Preventing public disorder.
Deterring and disrupting insurgent or criminal activity.
Providing unit security.
Protecting key infrastructure or bases.
Conducting searches.
Conducting cordon and searches.
Countering IEDs.
