Security Operations
Fire support plan of the squadron and protected force.
Other available support, such as Army aviation.
4-22. Given the commander’s guidance, the DRT commander then considers:
Location of the screen.
Movement/maneuver to occupy the screen.
Passage lanes and passage points.
Assigned AOs for platoons.
Air-ground integration.
Surveillance and acquisition assets.
Fires planning.
Mobility/countermobility/survivability.
Positioning of C2 nodes with or without vehicles.
Sustainment.
Control of displacement to subsequent positions.
4-23. Displacement of screen elements is event-driven. While displacing, the screen continues to maintain
contact and provide security. The following factors may dictate displacement:
Approach of an identified and specified threat element.
Detection by a threat force.
Relief by a friendly unit.
Movement of the protected force.
PLANNING CONSIDERATIONS FOR STATIONARY SCREEN
4-24. The DRT can conduct a stationary screen for a stationary or moving protected force. To ensure the
DRT can plan for and perform all the key tasks of a screen, the squadron provides the troop commander
with the information covered in the following discussion.
Augmentation
4-25. Augmentation covers any additional assets the troop receives to conduct the mission. Augmentation
from the squadron or IBCT can include the following:
Antiarmor, from a weapons company.
Engineer platoon.
Additional sniper squads.
Additional reconnaissance assets.
Air and missile defense, aviation, and sustainment assets.
General Trace of the Screen and Time the Screen Must be Established
4-26. A phase line placed along identifiable terrain graphically indicates the trace. Consideration should be
given to the amount of early warning required, range of indirect fires, desired protected force maneuver
space, and fields of observation. In a screen forward of the IBCT, this phase line represents the forward line
of own troops (FLOT). A coordinated fire line, which does not need to be on identifiable terrain, may be
placed beyond the FLOT to minimize the need for additional coordination for indirect fires. Placing
screening forces beyond the trace line requires approval of the squadron. Any forces positioned beyond the
trace should be protected by FSCMs, such as NFAs or restrictive fire areas.
Width of Screened Area of Operations
4-27. The troop may be assigned a wide frontage in excess of its capabilities. If the troop is required to
screen beyond its capabilities, the commander requests additional assets to accomplish the tasks assigned.
Careful consideration must be given when assigning ground-based and aerial sensor systems their own
