Chapter 4
Security Operations
Security operations are undertaken by a commander to allow for early and accurate
warning of enemy action, time, maneuver space for the protected force to react to the
threat, and effective use of the protected force. By the nature of their design,
reconnaissance units are inherently involved in security in some capacity regardless
of the specific mission they are conducting. Reconnaissance efforts assist in
providing information that enhances the security of maneuver forces. Reconnaissance
units are also given missions that are intended to specifically provide security for
other forces. These missions are most often given to motorized reconnaissance units
due to their mobility and increased firepower. Dismounted reconnaissance units may
also execute limited security missions as part of a larger security operation. The DRT
is well suited for security operations involving severely restricted and urban terrain
where their unique capabilities offer an advantage over a motorized reconnaissance
unit.
SECTION II – OVERVIEW
SECURITY PLANNING GUIDANCE
4-2. Effective DRT security operations require the reconnaissance squadron commander’s guidance,
defined in terms of:
Focus.
Tempo.
Engagement/displacement criteria.
4-3. This guidance answers basic questions the troop commander needs to know to plan and execute his
mission and in turn provide his own guidance to subordinate leaders. (Refer to FM 3-20.96 for more
detailed information.)
Note. The commander can specify different guidance for each phase of a security operation and
can adjust the components of his guidance at any point in the operation.
