<strong>Nova</strong> <strong>Scotia</strong>/Nunavut <strong>Command</strong> of The <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Canadian</strong> <strong>Legion</strong><br />

AVERY, Abraham Joseph “Abe” WWII<br />

Abe was born in Larry’s River, <strong>Nova</strong> <strong>Scotia</strong> on August 25, 1916. He joined the North <strong>Nova</strong><br />

<strong>Scotia</strong> Highlanders of the 9 th <strong>Canadian</strong> Infantry Brigade Division in June 1940. After<br />

transferring to the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders, he departed for England<br />

on July 21, 1944. Abe fought in the Battle of Falaise Gap in France; at the Battle of Scheldt,<br />

in the southwest Netherlands; and at the Leopold Canal in Belgium. He was wounded in<br />

Holland in October 1944 while attacking German bunkers. Abe spent recovery time in<br />

hospital in England before coming back to Canada in February 1945. He passed away on<br />

August 9, 2002. He was a member of the Hants County <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #009 for 7 years.<br />

BARRIE, Louis Raymond WWII & KOREA<br />

Louis was born to George Barrie and Lucy Morris in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton in 1925. He enlisted the<br />

first time in June 1944 and served as a Private in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. At the end<br />

of the war, he served with the Allied Occupational Force until his discharge in July 1946. He enlisted<br />

again in June 1951 and was in peacekeeping with the Black Watch in Germany until he was discharged<br />

in February 1953. His third enlistment was in August 1953 when he served with the <strong>Canadian</strong> Provost<br />

Corps Military Police in Korea where he received a citation for devotion to duty. His final discharge from<br />

the Armed Forces was in 1958. Louis married Rosella Cluett of Newfoundland, moved to Ontario, and<br />

raised five children. In retirement, they moved to Tracadie, <strong>Nova</strong> <strong>Scotia</strong> where they presently live.<br />

BASKER, John William WWI<br />

John was born in Mabou, <strong>Nova</strong> <strong>Scotia</strong>. He joined the Army and served with the<br />

<strong>Canadian</strong> Expeditionary Force in Northwest Europe and France during World War<br />

I. John was a member of Captain Angus L. MacDonald <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #132 in<br />

Inverness.<br />

BASKER, Colin WWII<br />

Colin was born in Inverness, <strong>Nova</strong> <strong>Scotia</strong>. He joined the Army during World War II<br />

and served with the <strong>Nova</strong> <strong>Scotia</strong> Highlanders in Italy and Northwest Europe. He is<br />

a Life member of Captain Angus L. Macdonald <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #132 in Inverness.<br />
