<strong>Nova</strong> <strong>Scotia</strong>/Nunavut <strong>Command</strong> of The <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Canadian</strong> <strong>Legion</strong><br />

GILLIS, William B. WWII & KOREA<br />

William, also known as Willie the Piper, was born in Inverness, <strong>Nova</strong> <strong>Scotia</strong> on January 17,<br />

1914. He worked in the mines and joined the Cape Breton Highlanders in 1940 to go<br />

overseas during WWII. He served in Northwest Europe, England, Holland, and Italy and<br />

finished out the war as the Pipe Major for the Highlanders Band. When war broke out in<br />

Korea, he re-joined, and this time, was the CSM, Princess Patricia’s <strong>Canadian</strong> Light<br />

Infantry. William returned home in 1953 and once again worked in the mines. He spent<br />

many years in the <strong>Legion</strong> as Sergeant at Arms, Service Officer and Zone <strong>Command</strong>er of<br />

Zone 6 at the time, now known as Zone 3. William was a member of Captain Angus L.<br />

MacDonald <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #132 in Inverness before he passed away on April 9, 1995.<br />

GOYETCHE, Frederick Elais WWII<br />

Frederick was born on July 24, 1912 in Cap Auget, Cape Breton. He joined the<br />

<strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Canadian</strong> Navy on September of 1939 and served in Canada on HMCS Arleux<br />

and on several other vessels as a cook. He was discharged in June 1945 and<br />

demobilized from the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Canadian</strong> Naval Volunteer Reserve as an excellent cook.<br />

He was awarded the <strong>Canadian</strong> Volunteer Service Medal and the Provisional Award.<br />

Frederick married Estelle Fougère of Poulamond, Cape Breton on November 27,<br />

1939. They had five children. Frederick worked on fishing vessels for the National<br />

Sea Fisheries Company. He passed away in Halifax on November 17, 1972.<br />

GUNN, John Stewart WWI<br />

John was born in Kenlock, <strong>Nova</strong> <strong>Scotia</strong> on February 28, 1898. He joined the Army<br />

and served with the <strong>Canadian</strong> Expeditionary Force in France and Europe during<br />

World War I.<br />

GRANT, Duncan WWI<br />

Duncan was born to Mrs. Jane Grant on July 12, 1892 in Big Tracadie, <strong>Nova</strong> <strong>Scotia</strong>.<br />

He was single and a store manager before being drafted at Camp Aldershot on June<br />

15, 1918. Duncan served as a Private with the 25 th Battalion Overseas <strong>Canadian</strong><br />

Expeditionary Forces.<br />
