Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion DUBOIS, Bernie PEACETIME Bernie was born in Verdun, QC on April 1, 1931. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy on December 2, 1948 in Montréal and served as a weapons expert on HMCS Ontario, La Hulloise, Magnificent, Algonquin, Athabaskan, Nootka, Nipigon, and Bonaventure. Bernie retired on December 4, 1973 with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He and his wife had three sons and one daughter. Bernie was a Life Member of Centennial Legion Branch #160 before he passed away in 2009. Submitted by the Centennial Branch #160 of The Royal Canadian Legion. DUNFIELD, Leonard Charles “Len” WWII Len was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on November 16, 1921. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on September 18, 1942, served in Newfoundland, and was honourably discharged on November 30, 1945. He was awarded the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, and the War Medal 1939-45. Len lived and worked in Falmouth and Windsor, NS and retired as postmaster of Falmouth in 1986. He was a member of Windsor Legion Branch #009 for 37 years and was a Charter member of the Lions Club in Wolfville, NS. Len passed away on August 22, 2011 at the age of 89. Submitted by the Hants County Branch #009 of The Royal Canadian Legion. DURLING, Robert Glenn WWII Robert was born in Lawrencetown, NS on June 29, 1923. He joined the Navy on July 15, 1941 and did his basic training in Esquimalt, BC. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy as an Ordinary Seaman, became an Able Seaman and was discharged as a Leading Seaman after 7 years. He was stationed in St. John’s, Newfoundland and served on a Corvette that escorted troop ships to England. He married Catherine K. Baxter in 1950 with whom he raised three children. Robert was a member of Lawrencetown Legion Branch #112 for 23 years. He retired from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in 1986 and died on November 14, 1989. Submitted by the Lawrencetown Branch #112 of The Royal Canadian Legion. DURLING, G. David WWII David was born in Lawrencetown, Annapolis County on April 11, 1925. He lived in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in his early childhood then moved to Halifax in 1941. In April 1943, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and after basic training, graduated as a Flying Officer at the age of 19. In April of 1944, he went to England as an Air Gunner and was killed in action on September 8, 1944. Submitted by the Lawrencetown Branch #112 of The Royal Canadian Legion. www.ns.legion.ca 53
