ecological <strong>and</strong> biological processes to progress naturally with little or no human<br />

influence or intervention. <strong>Soil</strong>s were not surveyed within the boundaries <strong>of</strong> the Cohutta<br />

Wilderness Area.<br />

Climate<br />

Prepared by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, National Water <strong>and</strong> Climate Center,<br />

Portl<strong>and</strong>, Oregon.<br />

Climate data are provided in the tables “Temperature <strong>and</strong> Precipitation,” “Freeze<br />

Dates in Spring <strong>and</strong> Fall,” <strong>and</strong> “Growing Season.” The data were recorded at Dalton,<br />

<strong>Georgia</strong>, in the period 1971 to 2000.<br />

Thunderstorm days, relative humidity, percent sunshine, <strong>and</strong> wind information are<br />

estimated from the First Order Station in Chattanooga, Tennessee.<br />

In winter, the average temperature is 41.8 degrees F <strong>and</strong> the average daily<br />

minimum temperature is 31.5 degrees. The lowest temperature on record, which<br />

occurred on January 21, 1985, is -10 degrees. In summer, the average temperature is<br />

77.1 degrees <strong>and</strong> the average daily maximum temperature is 87.9 degrees. The<br />

highest recorded temperature, which occurred on June 27, 1988, is 103 degrees.<br />

Growing degree days are shown in the table “Temperature <strong>and</strong> Precipitation.” They<br />

are equivalent to “heat units.” During the month, growing degree days accumulate by<br />

the amount that the average temperature each day exceeds a base temperature (50<br />

degrees F). The normal monthly accumulation is used to schedule single or<br />

successive plantings <strong>of</strong> a crop between the last freeze in spring <strong>and</strong> the first freeze in<br />

fall.<br />

The total annual precipitation is about 56.4 inches. Of this, 29.8 inches, or 53<br />

percent, usually falls in April through October. The growing season for most crops falls<br />

within this period. The heaviest 1-day rainfall during the period <strong>of</strong> record was 10.4<br />

inches on September 24, 1975. Thunderstorms occur on about 56 days each year,<br />

<strong>and</strong> most occur in July.<br />

The average seasonal snowfall is about 2.2 inches. The greatest snow depth at any<br />

one time was 18 inches on March 15, 1993. On the average, no days during the year<br />

have at least 1 inch <strong>of</strong> snow on the ground.<br />

The average relative humidity in midafternoon is about 57 percent. Humidity is<br />

higher at night, <strong>and</strong> the average at dawn is about 87 percent. The sun shines 64<br />

percent <strong>of</strong> the time possible in summer <strong>and</strong> 44 percent in winter. The prevailing wind is<br />

from the south. Average windspeed is highest, around 6.6 miles per hour, in March.<br />

How This <strong>Survey</strong> Was Made<br />

This survey was made to provide information about the soils <strong>and</strong> miscellaneous<br />

areas in the survey area. The information includes a description <strong>of</strong> the soils <strong>and</strong><br />

miscellaneous areas <strong>and</strong> their location <strong>and</strong> a discussion <strong>of</strong> their suitability, limitations,<br />

<strong>and</strong> management for specified uses. <strong>Soil</strong> scientists observed the steepness, length,<br />

<strong>and</strong> shape <strong>of</strong> the slopes; the general pattern <strong>of</strong> drainage; the kinds <strong>of</strong> crops <strong>and</strong> native<br />

plants; <strong>and</strong> the kinds <strong>of</strong> bedrock. They dug many holes to study the soil pr<strong>of</strong>ile, which<br />

is the sequence <strong>of</strong> natural layers, or horizons, in a soil. The pr<strong>of</strong>ile extends from the<br />

surface down into the unconsolidated material in which the soil formed. The<br />

unconsolidated material is devoid <strong>of</strong> roots <strong>and</strong> other living organisms <strong>and</strong> has not<br />

been changed by other biological activity.<br />

Currently, soils are mapped according to the boundaries <strong>of</strong> major l<strong>and</strong> resource<br />

areas (MLRAs). MLRAs are geographically associated l<strong>and</strong> resource units that share<br />

common characteristics related to physiography, geology, climate, water resources,<br />

soils, biological resources, <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong> uses (USDA, 2006). <strong>Soil</strong> survey areas typically<br />

consist <strong>of</strong> parts <strong>of</strong> one or more MLRA.
