Typical Pedon<br />

Subligna extremely gravelly s<strong>and</strong>y loam, 0 to 5 percent slopes, occasionally flooded;<br />

0.6 mile north <strong>of</strong> U.S. Highway 136 on Chestnut Mountain Road, 40 feet west <strong>of</strong> road<br />

on east side <strong>of</strong> creek bank; <strong>Whitfield</strong> County, <strong>Georgia</strong>; USGS topographic quadrangle,<br />

Sugar Valley, GA (1981); lat. 34 degrees 37 minutes 05 seconds N. <strong>and</strong> long. 85<br />

degrees 02 minutes 52 seconds W.<br />

A—0 to 4 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) extremely gravelly s<strong>and</strong>y loam; weak<br />

fine granular structure; very friable; many very fine, fine, medium, <strong>and</strong> coarse<br />

roots; 60 percent s<strong>and</strong>stone gravel; strongly acid; clear wavy boundary.<br />

Bw—4 to 16 inches; strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) extremely gravelly s<strong>and</strong>y loam; weak<br />

medium granular structure <strong>and</strong> weak fine subangular blocky structure; friable;<br />

many very fine, fine, medium, <strong>and</strong> coarse roots; 70 percent s<strong>and</strong>stone gravel; very<br />

strongly acid; abrupt wavy boundary.<br />

C—16 to 60 inches; brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) extremely gravelly loamy s<strong>and</strong>;<br />

massive; very friable; few very fine, fine, medium, <strong>and</strong> coarse roots; 70 percent<br />

s<strong>and</strong>stone gravel; strongly acid.<br />
