Replace Buried Pipes With M<strong>in</strong>imal Site Disturbance<br />

PROBLEM: Replac<strong>in</strong>g underground pipes by digg<strong>in</strong>g trenches often disrupts local activities <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>curs high costs <strong>for</strong> restor<strong>in</strong>g damaged surfaces.<br />

TECHNOLOGY: The pipel<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>sertion method (PIM) has an impact mole that breaks up exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pipe <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ground <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong>ces fragments <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g soil. It <strong>the</strong>n replaces<br />

<strong>the</strong> old pipe with a high-density polyethylene (HOPE) pipe.<br />

BENEFITS: e Replaces old pipe with a new one of equal or larger diameter<br />

* Can be used <strong>in</strong> areas where digg<strong>in</strong>g is difficult or impossible<br />

*Avoids <strong>in</strong>terruptions to traffic <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r operations<br />

M<strong>in</strong>imizes <strong>the</strong> cost of surface restoration<br />

* Applies to any brittle, fracturable pipe--<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g sewer, water, <strong>and</strong> gas l<strong>in</strong>es<br />
