Andrew C. Lemer<br />

Andrew Lemer received his B.S., M.S, <strong>and</strong> Ph.D. degrees <strong>in</strong> civil eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong><br />

Massachusetts Institute of Technology. An eng<strong>in</strong>eer-economist <strong>and</strong> planner, he was <strong>for</strong>merly Division<br />

Vice President with PRC Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, Inc. He is a member of <strong>the</strong> American Institute of Certified<br />

Planners, <strong>the</strong> American Society of Civil Eng<strong>in</strong>eers, <strong>the</strong> Urban L<strong>and</strong> Institute, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Macro-<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Society.<br />

Stephen C-Y. Lu<br />

Stephen Lu received his M.S. <strong>and</strong> Ph.D degrees from <strong>the</strong> Department of Mechanical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Robotics Institute of Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA. He is currently a tenured<br />

Associate Professor <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> found<strong>in</strong>g Director of <strong>the</strong> Knowledge-Based Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Systems Research<br />

Laboratory <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mechanical <strong>and</strong> Industrial Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Department at <strong>the</strong> University of Ill<strong>in</strong>ois at<br />

Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He is also a Research Associate Professor of <strong>the</strong> Computer Science<br />

Department <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Beckman Institute <strong>for</strong> Advanced Science <strong>and</strong> Technology at UIUC. His research<br />

<strong>in</strong>terests are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> development of artificial-<strong>in</strong>telligence-based techniques <strong>for</strong> advanced eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

automation, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegration of <strong>the</strong>se techniques with traditional eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g methods.<br />

Currently, he is develop<strong>in</strong>g knowledge process<strong>in</strong>g technology to support various concurrent<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> system management tasks. He has published over 100 technical papers, reports, <strong>and</strong> book<br />

chapters <strong>in</strong> this area, <strong>and</strong> served as a keynote speaker <strong>for</strong> several national <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational conferences.<br />

Dr. Lu is an associate editor of <strong>the</strong> Journal of Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> Industry, ASME Transactions, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

International Journal of Computer-Integrated Manufactur<strong>in</strong>g Systems. He also serves on several editorial<br />

committees <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g ASME Transactions, Journal of Intelligent Manufactur<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> International<br />

Journal of System Automation. He has organized many technical conferences <strong>and</strong> workshops, <strong>and</strong> was<br />

<strong>the</strong> Chairperson of <strong>the</strong> 1986 ASME Symposium on Knowledge-Based Expert Systems <strong>for</strong> Manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1989 ASME Symposium on Concurrent Product <strong>and</strong> Process Design.<br />

He is an active member of American Society of Military Eng<strong>in</strong>eers (ASME), SME, IEEE, <strong>and</strong><br />

AAAI, <strong>and</strong> is a correspond<strong>in</strong>g member of <strong>the</strong> International Institute <strong>for</strong> Production Research (CIRP). He<br />

has served as a technical consultant <strong>and</strong> expert panelist to various <strong>in</strong>dustries <strong>and</strong> Federal agencies. He<br />

received <strong>the</strong> Presidential Young Investigator (PYI) Award from <strong>the</strong> National Science Foundation <strong>in</strong> 1987,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Outst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g Young Manufactur<strong>in</strong>g Eng<strong>in</strong>eer Award from <strong>the</strong> Society of Manufactur<strong>in</strong>g Eng<strong>in</strong>eers <strong>in</strong><br />

1988, <strong>and</strong> was selected as an Outst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g Young Man of America <strong>in</strong> 1988. In 1990, he received <strong>the</strong><br />

Xerox Senior Faculty Research Award from UIUC <strong>for</strong> his high quality research accomplishments over <strong>the</strong><br />

previous 5 years. In <strong>the</strong> same year, he was also appo<strong>in</strong>ted as a University Scholar <strong>for</strong> his excellent<br />

contributions to scholarly activities.<br />
