XROT-IDEEA Manufacturability Advisory System <strong>for</strong> Rotational Parts: ano<strong>the</strong>r application of<br />

IDEEA <strong>for</strong> manufacturability check<strong>in</strong>g of rotational parts dur<strong>in</strong>g various design stages (30). The<br />

system <strong>in</strong>tegrates CADROT, a CAD tool (R-a-4), with an Al based process plann<strong>in</strong>g knowledge<br />

base (R-d-1), uses multiple representations (R-a-1), <strong>and</strong> con<strong>for</strong>ms with PDES/STEP st<strong>and</strong>ards (Ra-3).<br />

The CAD <strong>and</strong> CAPP knowledge are implemented on two separate computers, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>teraction modes between designers <strong>and</strong> planners can be both local <strong>and</strong> remote (R-d-4).<br />

CASCADE-T Computer-aided Syn<strong>the</strong>sis <strong>and</strong> Computer-aided Design of Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Tolerances:<br />

an extended IDEEA environment <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> doma<strong>in</strong> of tolerance syn<strong>the</strong>sis <strong>for</strong> mechanical design (Ra-2)<br />

(31). Tolerance is an important subject <strong>in</strong> concurrent eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, serv<strong>in</strong>g as a<br />

INDEED Intelligent <strong>and</strong> Distributed Environment <strong>for</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Design: a major extension of<br />

IDEEA which supports remote <strong>and</strong> local <strong>in</strong>teractions <strong>for</strong> group design (R-d-3 <strong>and</strong> R-d-4) (32).<br />

INDEED provides extended capabilities from object-oriented database technology (R-b-2) which<br />

allow consistent <strong>and</strong> persistent data storage (R-a-4) by multiple eng<strong>in</strong>eers. It also support<br />

record<strong>in</strong>g of design rationale (R-b-1), manag<strong>in</strong>g conflict situations (R-b-3) <strong>and</strong> ownerships (Rd-2).<br />

It allows hypo<strong>the</strong>tical reason<strong>in</strong>g by <strong>in</strong>dividual eng<strong>in</strong>eers <strong>in</strong> a group design sett<strong>in</strong>g (R-c-4).<br />

PRIDE Provid<strong>in</strong>g Rationale <strong>in</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Design: an application of AIDEMS <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> doma<strong>in</strong><br />

of frictional clutch design <strong>for</strong> transmissions used <strong>in</strong> heavy vehicles (33). Different design<br />

assumptions <strong>and</strong> rationale at both strategic <strong>and</strong> tactical levels dur<strong>in</strong>g clutch design are captured<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> system (R-b-l).<br />

PRIME Provid<strong>in</strong>g Rationale <strong>in</strong> a Multi-agent Environment: an <strong>in</strong>tegrated know-how <strong>and</strong> knowwhy<br />

environment which comb<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> functions <strong>and</strong> methods from IDEEA <strong>and</strong> AIDEMS. It<br />

supports <strong>the</strong> record<strong>in</strong>g of design histories (R-b- 1) <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>teractive mode, helps <strong>the</strong> management<br />

of design plans, <strong>and</strong> controls <strong>the</strong> shar<strong>in</strong>g of design decisions <strong>and</strong> rationale with o<strong>the</strong>r eng<strong>in</strong>eers<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same design group (R-d-2, R-d-4). PRIME is currently be<strong>in</strong>g tested <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> doma<strong>in</strong> of<br />

transmission design.<br />

MEGA Manag<strong>in</strong>g Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Group Activities: an <strong>in</strong>tegrated know-how <strong>and</strong> know-why<br />

environment to support team design based on <strong>the</strong> discourse design model (34). The system<br />

supports adaptive focus with different viewpo<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>and</strong> abstractions (R-R-c-2), record<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

rationale (R-b-l), detect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> resolv<strong>in</strong>g conflicts (R-b-3), <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrates with different CAD<br />

tools (R-a-4, <strong>and</strong> R-d-l). It can be used <strong>for</strong> synchronous <strong>and</strong> asynchronous <strong>in</strong>teractions (R-d-3)<br />

with local <strong>and</strong> remote design teams (R-d-4).<br />

PRO-IDEEA Probabilistically Valued IDEEA Environment: a system that support acquisition,<br />

representation, <strong>and</strong> manipulation of probabilistically valued attributes (35). It uses objects from<br />

IDEEA <strong>for</strong> representation (R-a- I), constra<strong>in</strong>ts from IDEEA <strong>for</strong> manipulation (R-c- 1), <strong>and</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>e<br />
