May 2001 – U.N. Security Council renews an arms embargo on Liberia as punishment <strong>for</strong> Taylor’s<br />

trading of weapons <strong>for</strong> diamonds <strong>with</strong> rebels in Sierra Leone.<br />

February 5, 2002 – Charles Taylor declares a state of emergency when it appears that LURD rebels<br />

may be gaining on Monrovia.<br />

June 4, 2003 – In Accra, Ghana, Liberian peace talks commence while the U.N.-mandated Special<br />

Court in Sierra Leone indicts Charles Taylor’s on 17 counts of war crimes committed in support of<br />

rebels in Sierra Leone.<br />

June 6, 2003 – First offensive by LURD rebels on Monrovia.<br />

June 17, 2003 – In Accra, Ghana, representatives from LURD and another rebel group, the<br />

Movement <strong>for</strong> Democracy in Liberia (MODEL), sign a ceasefire agreement <strong>with</strong> the Taylor<br />

government.<br />

June 21-22, 2003 – Breaking the ceasefire, LURD and Taylor’s government <strong>for</strong>ces continue fighting<br />

in Monrovia.<br />

June 27, 2003 – Another ceasefire is signed in Accra, Ghana.<br />

July 4, 2003 – ECOWAS approves sending 3,000 regional peacekeepers into Liberia in order to<br />

restore peace.<br />

July 19, 2003 – LURD launches their final attack on Monrovia, leaving 1,000 dead and nearly<br />

600,000 displaced.<br />

August 4, 2003 – <strong>The</strong> first group of Nigerian peacekeepers under an ECOWAS mandate arrive in<br />

Liberia.<br />

August 11, 2003 – Charles Taylor steps down from the presidency and leaves <strong>for</strong> asylum in Nigeria.<br />

August 18, 2003 – Representatives from LURD, MODEL, and the Liberian government sign the<br />

Comprehensive Peace Agreement in Accra, Ghana.<br />
