ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA<br />

Research is a tool for change and an essential instrument for matching theory with spatial<br />

reality for the improvement <strong>of</strong> the society's spatial and non spatial environments (Magi,<br />

2005). The analysis <strong>of</strong> the spatial and local economic development provides a basis for the<br />

better understanding <strong>of</strong>the socio-economic viability <strong>of</strong>the landscape and cultural attributes in<br />

the study area In this manner some theoretical accepted principles are translated into reality<br />

in this chapter. In some way, the local authorities in the Ulundi Local Municipality have<br />

neglected the provision <strong>of</strong>local economic development features and facilities.<br />

This section <strong>of</strong>the study provides an insight into the situational and land use analysis <strong>of</strong> the<br />

local economic development in terms <strong>of</strong> the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats<br />

(SWan <strong>of</strong> the study area. The section <strong>of</strong>fers an overview into the available human and<br />

natural resources such as the population, service levels, needs <strong>of</strong> the people and landscape<br />

attributes providing a framework <strong>of</strong>development in the long run for the study area.<br />

6.2 RESTATEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES<br />

In order to deal appropriately with this section <strong>of</strong>the work, it is necessary to refresh our focus<br />

<strong>of</strong>the study, the objectives <strong>of</strong>the research as stated earlier in chapter one were outlined as:<br />

(a) To determine the various landscape and cultural attributes (land uses) existing<br />

in the Ulundi Local Municipality and establish the extent to which these<br />

attributes are <strong>of</strong>developmental relevance to local community.<br />

(b) To investigate the steps taken to alleviate poverty. empower women and<br />

facilitate socio-economic upliftment <strong>of</strong> the rural communities such as<br />
