6.4.1 Objective One: Existing landscape and cnltural attributes in U1nndi<br />

The fIrst objective sought: To determine the various land uses (landscape and cultural<br />

attributes) existing in the Ulundi local municipality and establish the extent at which these<br />

attributes are <strong>of</strong>developmental relevance to community.<br />

In addressing the question <strong>of</strong> landscape and cultural attributes, the study examines the<br />

knowledge and understanding <strong>of</strong> respondents, contribution <strong>of</strong> these attributes to the local<br />

economic development initiatives and awareness <strong>of</strong> cultural and heritage resources in the<br />

study area<br />

6.4.1.1 Knowledge and understanding <strong>of</strong>tourism potentials <strong>of</strong> landscape and culture<br />

According to Table 6.9 that presents the knowledge about the existence <strong>of</strong> game reserves in<br />

urban Ulundi, approximately 51.4% affirmed their knowledge <strong>of</strong> the existence <strong>of</strong> the game<br />

reserves whereas about 47.1% indicated otherwise. The remaining 1.4% indicated that they<br />

were not sure whether they really knew about the existence and understood the importance <strong>of</strong><br />

game reserves in the Ulundi municipal area. The existence <strong>of</strong> valuable environmental assets<br />

like game reserves ought to be known to the residents to maximise their social, economic and<br />

developmental spin-<strong>of</strong>fs and benefIts. In the light <strong>of</strong>this the tourism <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong>ZDM indicated<br />

that the <strong>of</strong>fice has been distributing to the general public the tourism products that the entire<br />

<strong>Zululand</strong> District has to <strong>of</strong>fer both local and international tourists in the form <strong>of</strong> pamphlets.<br />

local newspaper, radio, use <strong>of</strong> bill boards and organisation <strong>of</strong> special events. At the local<br />

municipal level, it was detected with concern that tourism as an economic wing <strong>of</strong> the<br />
