mandate to ensure job-creation opportunities. Drawing a strategic plan towards this challenge<br />

befits the involvement <strong>of</strong>the community <strong>of</strong>Ulundi through its community leaders, local civic<br />

organizations and all relevant stakeholders. Projects are meant for the people and therefore<br />

initiating any poverty alleviating community projects without their participation from the<br />

onset creates ignorance and communal apathy,<br />

Capacitating municipal staff on matters <strong>of</strong> fundraising is embedded in this socio-economic<br />

challenge. The sector departments that share a common vision with the local municipality on<br />

the same subject <strong>of</strong> women empowerment, poverty relief and child-youth support<br />

programmes, most <strong>of</strong>ten than not, have readily available resources for such purposes.<br />

However, the inability <strong>of</strong> some municipal <strong>of</strong>ficials to present business plans and proposals to<br />

that effect compounds the poor socio-economic state <strong>of</strong> affairs in the Ulundi Local<br />

Municipality.<br />

Following the discussions on this said objective it can be concluded that the situational and<br />

local economic development in Ulundi is influenced negatively by the low income levels <strong>of</strong><br />

household heads. Again the findings present a challenge to this objective <strong>of</strong> alleviating<br />

poverty among women and advocating the socio-economic development <strong>of</strong> the study area<br />

with particular emphasis on pro-poor LED strategies.<br />

6.4.3 Objective Three: Strategies for the stimulation <strong>of</strong> local ecouomic development<br />

The third objective sought: To examine the strategies already taken to stimulate local<br />

economic development to reverse the current trends <strong>of</strong>decline and lack <strong>of</strong>diversity <strong>of</strong>the<br />

economy to 'grow the economic pie'.<br />

It is perceived that the economy <strong>of</strong> Ulundi has been experiencing a decline. This section <strong>of</strong><br />

the research seeks to present an overview <strong>of</strong> the possible causes <strong>of</strong> this trend as gathered<br />

during the process <strong>of</strong> interview. l! further anempts to evaluate the local economic<br />

development strategies which are in operation in the area so as to suggest possible strategies<br />
