members. This demographic pattern could be attributed to numerous factors, among which<br />

include economic and social incapacity <strong>of</strong>most households.<br />

With regard to income levels, respondents were requested to indicate their situation. As<br />

shown in Table 6.15, the average monthly income <strong>of</strong> bread-winners <strong>of</strong> urban Ulundi in 2007<br />

was as follows: Approximately 26.8% <strong>of</strong> respondents receive above R6001, 25.7% <strong>of</strong>bread­<br />

winners earn an average monthly income <strong>of</strong> RJOOI-R6000, 15.9% between RI501-R3000;<br />

15.2% are remunerated between R251-R1500 and an amount <strong>of</strong>R1-R250 is earned monthIy<br />

situational and local economic development in Ulundi is impacted negatively by the low<br />

monthly income <strong>of</strong> close to 40% bread-winners and the unemployment challenge facing a<br />

section <strong>of</strong> them. This scenario presents a challenge to the objective <strong>of</strong> alleviating poverty.<br />
