A cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2010 to May 2011 with <strong>the</strong> objectives <strong>of</strong> assessing<br />

dairy husbandry practices, characterizing milk marketing system and identifying constraints and<br />

prospects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dairy sector. Data were collected by way <strong>of</strong> questionnaire interview, visits to production<br />

units’ sites and discussion to key informants. A total <strong>of</strong> 220 smallholders were interviewed<br />

using semi-structured questionnaire. The five study districts showed similarities in herd composition<br />

and husbandry practices. Milk yield from local breeds <strong>of</strong> cattle varied among <strong>the</strong> study districts<br />

but this variation was statistically insignificant (p>0.05). However, milk yield from crossbred animals,<br />

age at first calving (AFC) and calving interval (CI) showed significant differences (p
