Burgtheater less than four months before, after Leopold II dismissed Salieri from the post. 73
The results of Süssmayr’s temporary appointment as assistant to Weigl were soon felt: the
theatre’s weekly ledger for 3-9 December 1791 records a payment of 23fl to Süssmayr “für
extra Dienste”; see Figure 5.6.
Two weeks later, Süssmayr received another payment of 10 fl for his services between 24 and
30 December. Like the previous year’s entry, these records do not specify Süssmayr’s precise
role, but additional information is provided by the yearly account book for the theatrical year
1791-92. Among the items listed is a payment of 43 fl to “Siessmayer Franz, Cembalista für
geleistete extra Dienste,” probably corresponding to the total of the two weekly payments
listed here and a further payment in 1792. 74 “Cembalista” could imply repetiteur duties or
73 Leopold had in fact specified that Umlauf, not Teyber, should act as Weigl’s assistant; see Leopold’s draft
document of 27 July 1791 quoted in John A. Rice, “Emperor and Impresario: Leopold II and the
Transformation of Viennese Musical Theater, 1790-1792” (PhD diss., University of California, Berkeley,
1987), 374.
Vienna: Sources and Documents, 1783-1792 (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1998), 13-14n7. Link’s statement that
Süssmayr was paid “for accompanying at several rehearsals” is not supported by the evidence, although it is
conceivable that this was one of his functions.
