Mozart was concerned with reassuring his father of his religious credentials on several<br />

occasions, apparently in response to accusations of neglect and second-hand reports reaching<br />

Leopold concerning his son’s behaviour. 94 As early as June <strong>1781</strong>, Mozart was entreating his<br />

father:<br />

wegen meinen Seelenheyl seyen sie ohne Sorgen, mein bester vatter! – ich bin ein fälliger Junger<br />

Mensch wie alle andere, und kann zu meinem trost wünschen daß es alle so wenig wären wie ich.<br />

– sie glauben vieleicht sachen von mir, die nicht also sind; – der hauptfehler bey mir ist daß ich<br />

nach dem scheine nicht allzeit so handle, wie ich handeln sollte. – daß ich mich geprahlt hätte ich<br />

Esse alle fast=täge fleisch, ist nicht wahr; aber gesagt habe ich daß ich mir nichts daraus mache,<br />

und es für keine sünde halte; denn fasten heisst bey mir sich abrechen; weniger essen als sonst. –<br />

Ich höre alle sonn= und feyertäge Meine Messe, und wenn es seyn kann, die werktäge auch, das<br />

wissen sie, mein vatter...übrigens seyn sie versichert daß ich gewis Religion habe. 95<br />

This passage, evidently provoked by an accusation of Leopold’s, was written in the context of<br />

Mozart’s recent break with the Salzburg service, and reflects the complicated path Mozart<br />

chose to negotiate of professing filial obedience while asserting his own independence.<br />

Leopold may have consciously or unconsciously regarded his son’s acquiescence as a<br />

necessary feature of good moral makeup, and the best Mozart could do in reply was to<br />

profess his religious credentials, even in the face of accusations of rebellious and impious<br />

behaviour. The issue was to raise its head again with Mozart’s betrothal to Constanze, and<br />

after the famous passage in the December <strong>1781</strong> letter describing his fiancée for the first time,<br />

the composer continued:<br />

wenn sie aber glauben könnten ich könnte sie vergessen – das würde mich recht sehr schmerzen.<br />

Ich soll denken, daß ich eine unsterbliche Seele habe – nicht allein denk ich das, sondern ich<br />

glaube es; – worinn bestünde denn sonst der unterschied zwischen Menschen und vieh? 96<br />

In the face of passages like these, the account of the joint confession at the Theatine church<br />

in August 1782 appears designed to convince Leopold of the moral rectitude in his son’s<br />

actions, with the main point being the positive religious effects that flowed from Mozart and<br />
