određene promišljene, isplanirane, racionalizirane i efikasne aktivnosti.
THE ANATOMY OF BIOPOLITICS AS POWER OVER BARE
LIFE: THE END OF THE POLITICAL AND THE
TRAGEDY OF BIOS
The paper deals with Foucault’s attempt, in his later thought, to delineate
a significantly different paradigm of social dynamics within the postindustrial
society of late modernity. Foucault shows that the constellation
of relationships in which the power of science, (bio)technological production,
and manipulation of life have spawned a period of post-politics or
biopolitics.
Traditionally (Aristotle), politics is understood as the focal point of
articulation of the plurality of interests, as the site of making important
choices, as well as the art of the possible regulated by human society. Biopolitics,
on the other hand, is a form of post-politics, which is characterized
by mere automatism, formalism, and is managed by the state of post-ideological
neoliberal consensus where all decision-making criteria are guided
only by market efficiency and profitability.
Special emphasis is placed on grasping the notion of bioethical implications
arising from the following conceptual framework: biopolitics – labour
– bioethics. Labour here is understood as a basic bio-economic category
in society. Through labour we can perceive that postmodern biopolitics is
born within bio-economy (which should be understood as an augmentation
of productive forces) in which the set of human metabolic functions, along
with nature, is exploited in a pre-determined biopolitical fashion.
Thus, the scope of politics is reduced to mere bio-governing (governmentality)
that aspires to exclude subjects from the sphere of life, while
those subjects that are involved are directed towards certain deliberate,
planned, rationalized and market-efficient activities.
