METAPHYSICAL PRECONDITIONS OF THE IDEA
OF HUMAN ENHANCEMENT
In the Classical Antiquity man understood himself as a part of the Cosmos,
cyclical movement, nature. In the Middle Ages man has subordinated
himself to the Creator and waited for the arrival of salvation. Modern man
has exchanged religious promises for the idea of progress and the belief in
the Creator was substituted with the belief in Man. Contemporary man is
trying to adopt rights and power which belong to the “Power of creation or
to the Creator”, which can be observed in the idea of human technological
enhancement. This reveals metaphysical roots of the world-historical situation
in which human takes over the role of an absolute being – the Creator.
The problem of the metaphysication of man is problematic for two reasons.
The first one is that the classic metaphysics understands being as eternal,
invariable, as “is” which enables Beings to be and hence determinates what
they can become. The second problem is that man does not posses absolute
knowledge, which reveals destructive background of the newly liberated
power, where it is not possible to anticipate the consequences of its usage
and therefore to take the responsibility for them.
BIOETHICAL PRINCIPLES IN PRECLINICAL RESEARCH
OF ANALGESICS
The use of in vivo models in preclinical drug testing remains a controversial
issue in bioethics (anthropocentric and biocentric ethics). Animals
should be provided with the basic right to life appropriate to their species.
The aim was to examine the justification for the use of animals in preclinical
research of analgesics (e.g. nimesulide). We searched Medline database. Of
