i odgovoriti na određene moralne dvojbe. Uz moralnu opravdanost usko je
vezan i problem zakonske, odnosno političke regulative elektrokonvulzivne
terapije u psihijatriji.
S druge strane,
elektrokonvulzivna terapija vrlo često u velikoj mjeri utječe na osobni
identitet pacijenta. Upravo odmicanje od »novinarske« bioetike i upotreba
filozofske refleksije mogu dati određeni orijentir i smjernice u daljnjem
razmatranju ECT-a u bioetičkoj i biopolitičkoj sferi. Shodno tomu, pokazat
ću da prihvaćanje filozofskih razjašnjenja »obvezuje« i prihvaćanje principa
predostrožnosti prilikom razmatranja zakonskog odobrenja.
BIOPOLITICS AND BIOETHICS IN PSYCHIATRY –
PROBLEM OF ECT
Although in use for more than seventy years, electroconvulsive therapy
(ECT) remains in the centre of bioethical debates with the main task
of answering certain ethical and moral questions and dilemmas. Beside
“standard” question of moral validity and moral permissibility, even more
frequent subject matter becomes the question of legal and legislative regulation
of ECT in psychiatry. In this paper, I will try to show that certain
moral dilemmas evince from specific nature of therapy – namely biological
antagonism, as well as effects and influence on patient’s personal identity.
Consequently, I will try to show that its antagonistic nature does not have
role in negative moral evaluation of the therapy. On the other side, ECT
does affect patient’s personal identity to a significant and large degree.
Moreover, I will try to show that both fields of bioethics and biopolitics can
be provided with certain guidelines for future considerations of ECT by
distancing from standard and “journalistic” bioethical considerations and
by use of philosophical reflections. As result, principle of precaution seems
like a logical consequent of philosophical consideration – which eventually
can be used for consideration and clarification of legal regulation of ECT.
