the ethically relevant point at which the conceptus reaches the status of an
autonomous, self-empowered entity. In the early modern era, dominated by
preformationism, the formative principle, formerly postulated by e.g. Thomists,
was temporarily marginalized by circumventing the vexing question
of ontogenetic development. When epigenesis came to the fore, it was the
intrinsic vis vitalis or Bildungstrieb inherent in the embryo that guaranteed
its self-sufficiency from the start. Christian scholars sometimes claim that
the current knowledge of genetics support this view, because genes actually
perform the executive work formerly attributed to the vital power. I argue
that the gene-centrism of modern genetics indeed supports this claim.
However, this gene-centrism itself is now under attack from a more inclusive
systems perspective. In the face of recent findings of epigenetics and
such phenomena as maternal effects, the supposed self-sufficiency of the
early embryo may be in some degree reconsidered.
NASTANAK ŽIVOTA:
RANE MODERNE I SUVREMENE TEORIJE
RAZVOJNE BIOLOGIJE I NJIHOV ETIČKI ZNAČAJ
izbjegavanju iritantnoga pitanja o ontogenetskom razvoju.
inkluzivnije sistemske perspektive.
