PATIENT’S DIVERGENT PERCEPTIONS OF THE
RISKS FROM TAKING DRUGS
From Patient’s “Enchantment” to “Disenchantment”
by the Effects of Biomedical Drugs Therapy
Biomedical drugs have been issues of controversy not only in terms
of their development, testing and sale, but also in terms of their meaning
and usage. The goal of this paper is to research the patient’s perception and
basic conceptualisation of the risk, which is, even when the patient is not
informed in detail, much richer than the one of the expert and it expresses
a legitimate level of concern that the experts generally omit.
Since not only a professional-technocratic identification, definition
and foreseeing of risk, but also their measuring and control, have depended
on presumptions and quantitative methods which are very often ethically
questionable, such an approach to the risks has been less and less accepted
by the patients as legitimate.
For this very reason, the way from the patient’s “enchantment” by the
therapeutic effects of the drugs towards a growing concern because of their
iatrogenic effects, has lately become increasingly shorter. Piling up of evidence
on harmful effects of “chemical” drugs – which at the beginning have
been claimed by science and media as “miraculous”, “magical bullets”,
“safe”, “intelligent” – has resulted in patient’s “disenchantment” and refusal
to use them and his/hers turning towards “natural” ways of treatment.
