CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES IN INTEGRATIVE BIOETHICS –
THE EXAMPLE OF CONFUCIANISM
One of the key methodological determinants of the concept of integrative
bioethics is the inclusion of cultural perspectives as equal participants
in discussions on specific bioethical issues as well as in efforts for a pluriperspective
formation of orientational knowledge. The broadly defined notion
of cultural perspectives includes the positions (social, cultural, worldview,
religious, activist, artistic, etc.) that develop their particular views on
bioethical problems created by the scientific-technological development,
and are not characterised by scientific methodology and thus do not belong
to the sphere of scientific perspectives. The intention of this paper is to
consider some questions and potentials of thus conceived notion of cultural
perspectives on the example of one of those perspectives – Confucian tradition
of thought. Namely, Confucianism as one of the longest traditions
in the history of mankind has greatly influenced the formation of Far East
civilisation’s worldview. Therefore it surely seems worthy to examine specific
Confucian understanding of the self, the person and its relationship to
society, as well as the relationship of man and nature. These views, especially
in the contemporary attempts to include Confucianism in the global
bioethical discussion, are raising challenging questions on the theoretical
and practical level, so we need to take into account the possible Confucian
contributions in the dialogue on orientational knowledge.
