vide iznad konkretne empirije u transcendenciji.
BIOETHICAL DILEMMAS IN THE
CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY?
The context of bioethical dilemmas
The contemporary society has created an alienated system as a framework
for the practice and interpretation of its rationality. Bioethics, developed
within this society, follows its rationality and remains constrained
within its interpretative framework of life. Bioethics itself is a part of the
consciousness of the contemporary society, alienated from its essence – understanding
life as a whole.
There is no dilemma for thecontemporary society: bioethical standards
and norms are an integral part of the rationalization of the system and
legitimization of its actions by characterizing them as ethical. Bioethics
is expected to provide a normative and consequential alibi for society’s
instrumental values. Two types of criticism were raised with regards to
bioethical understanding of life: (1) criticism of anthropocentrism from the
point of view of biocentric bioethics, and (2) criticism of bioethics from the
theological/religious point of view, which does not define the meaning of
life within the framework of individual’s earthly existence.
These theses are elaborated in the paper with regards to several relations:
(a) Bioethics and system. The contemporary society has developed its
rational system as an alienated system, with self-rationalization as
its main purpose. People have been swallowed up by the system
(Habermas). Bioethics is understood as its integral component. Its
standards and norms are subjugated to the rationality of this alienated
system and serve as its legitimization when it faces criticism
over endangering life, especially human. Bioethics is supposed to
justify the profitable care for (human) life.
