trees a day, out of which 14% originating from northern boreal forests and
7% originating from tropical rainforests, get to be sacrificed in order to
indulge the human “behind”. Although the production of 100%-recycled
toilet paper requires 50% less water and 40% less energy, and results in
35% less water pollution and 74% less atmosphere pollution, only 6% of
Americans tend to use it. Each ton of recycled paper can save 13 trees and
2.5 oil barrels, as well as 4,100 kilowatts of electrical energy, 31,380 litres
of water and 4 m 3 of waste, which explains the fact that the carbon footprint
of a single recycled toilet paper sheet amounts to only 1.1 g of CO 2 , i.e. significantly
less than the 1.8 g of CO 2 that comes from the production of one
standard toilet paper sheet. Bottom line, using the left hand and a washing
bowl, like 1.3 billion Indians do, can decrease the ecological footprint even
further; an advancement of civilization worth 384 saved trees throughout
the average human lifespan.
