the lake. As they travel, James wonders how Lancelet fell from grace and he simply says that it
was because of a women. As the two men scout ahead, Snow tends to Ruth, who thanks her for
giving James something to believe in. She tells Snow that James has always dreamed of having
a wife and child, and shows Snow the magical necklace that her mother gave to her to predict
the sex of her child. Ruth explains how it works and offers to try it, and Snow reluctant agrees.
When they try it, nothing happens and Ruth dismisses it as a superstition. Snow starts to cry
and then tells Ruth that she has been cursed with infertility. Ruth tells her that the lake waters
should be able to heal her as well, and assures Snow that she will be a wonderful mother.
As the group moves through the woods, Aurora starts to fall behind and Mulan says that she
should have stayed back. When the princess complains about the cold, Emma offers her jacket
and says that she can sympathize with screwing up. As they talk, they arrive at the castle across
the lake.
James and the others arrive at the lake only to discover that it has dried up.
Using his storybook, Henry finds the mausoleum where Regina has her vault. He finds the
concealed door beneath the casket and goes down into the chamber. When he opens one box, two
sneaks emerge from it. David arrives in time to slam the lid shut and explains Regina realized
that Henry had set her up and asked David to help. Henry says that he should be over in the
Enchanted Forest with Emma and Mary Margaret, learning to fight and ride horses, and David
tells him that they’ll do it together from now on.
James explores the lake bed and finds the siren’s skeleton. He realizes that when he killed
the siren before, it destroyed the lake.
Lancelot says that there is still hope and finds a small shell containing one sip of the water.
Ruth, overhearing, tells Snow to drink it so it will lift the curse and let them have a child. When
Snow refuses to let her give up her life, Ruth says that parents put their children first and Snow
will understand. Snow disagrees, saying that she was raised without a mother and wouldn’t
know how to be one. James brings the water over and Ruth reluctantly drinks it, and then tells
Snow that to have faith that they’ll find another way.
Mary Margaret and the others enter the castle and find Snow and James’ nursery. As Mulan
and Aurora go to watch the gate, Snow talks about how she had planned to teach Emma everything
in the room, but they never got to be a family. Emma says that they have a family in
Storybrooke and they need to go back, and they wonder how it can work.
Ruth doesn’t recover and James realizes that something is wrong. She stops him and says
that there is no more magic there and she doesn’t want to spend her last moments that way.
James blames himself but Ruth says that he shouldn’t be and that she would give her life for
his happiness. Her only regret is that she won’t see him marry Snow. Snow tells her that she
will and asks Lancelot to perform their wedding then and there. He performs the ritual using a
chalice as Ruth looks on, smiling. As they kiss, Ruth passes away and James says goodbye to
her mother.
Emma and Mary Margaret find the wardrobe and realize that they have to take it back to
the island to find someone who can use magic to activate it. Lancelot arrives and explains that
he heard about the ogre attack and came to make sure they were okay. He’s sent Aurora and
Mulan to make camp and then examines the wardrobe carefully. When he mentions Henry, Mary
Margaret draws a sword and realizes that it’s trick because there is only one person they told
about Henry. ”Lancelot” transforms into Cora and she explains that Lancelot died a long time
ago but she gave the survivors a hero to rally around.
Cora pins them both with magic and thanks Snow for helping her find a way back. While Cora
tells Mary Margaret that she plans to visit her daughter and son, Emma uses the gunpowder
from her bullets to start a fire and burn the wardrobe Cora attacks her but Mulan arrives in time
to deflect the fireball. The sorceress teleports away, warning that they’re not done, and Emma
realizes that their way home is destroyed.
After James buries his mother, he tells Snow that he still has a family with her. He gives her
the necklace and Snow starts to tell him about the curse. However, the necklace indicates the
child’s sex and she realizes that they’re going to have a child someday.
Realizing that the curse can be broken, she tells James that it’s a surprise. He goes to regroup
their forces and tells Snow that they will take back the kingdom as a family. Once he leaves,
Emma turns to Lancelot and realizes that he conspired with Ruth to put the last bit of lake water
