While <strong>the</strong> diversity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pathogen population creates problems, <strong>the</strong>re are<br />

ways to manage rust diseases <strong>in</strong> CWANA countries, such as through effective<br />

deployment <strong>of</strong> resistance sources and use <strong>of</strong> durable resistance <strong>in</strong> an Integrated<br />

Regional <strong>Cereal</strong> <strong>Rust</strong>s Management Programme. Hence, breed<strong>in</strong>g for disease<br />

resistance <strong>in</strong> CWANA could be achieved us<strong>in</strong>g broad-based resistance that<br />

could be facilitated by: (1) adequate measures for gene deployment across <strong>the</strong><br />

region, (2) use <strong>of</strong> molecular markers to follow <strong>the</strong> flow and <strong>the</strong> build-up <strong>of</strong><br />

resistance <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> breed<strong>in</strong>g programmes’ germplasm, (3) use <strong>of</strong> markers to<br />

monitor <strong>the</strong> genetic diversity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rust populations across <strong>the</strong> region, and<br />

(4) ma<strong>in</strong>tenance <strong>of</strong> an adequate level <strong>of</strong> host diversity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> breed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

programmes to stabilize resistance to <strong>the</strong> predom<strong>in</strong>ant cereal rusts.<br />
