Conclusion<br />

Relatively old bread wheat cultivars <strong>of</strong> Ethiopia orig<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g from Kenya,<br />

Kenyan cultivars and CIMMYT advanced l<strong>in</strong>ed used as supplemental yellow<br />

rust differentials demonstrated durable resistance <strong>in</strong> Ethiopia. However, it can<br />

be concluded that most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> commercial cultivars released dur<strong>in</strong>g 1997<br />

became susceptible to yellow rust shortly after release. The recurrent outbreaks<br />

<strong>of</strong> yellow rust disease could be due to a comb<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

about recent developments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pathogen races <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region and <strong>the</strong><br />

cont<strong>in</strong>uous release <strong>of</strong> cultivars with similar parentage. Future breed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

programmes should <strong>in</strong>volve <strong>the</strong> exploitation <strong>of</strong> genes present <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cultivars<br />

that have proven to have a quantitative type <strong>of</strong> resistance. To susta<strong>in</strong> wheat<br />

production <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region <strong>in</strong> general, and particularly <strong>in</strong> Ethiopia, monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

races and <strong>in</strong>ventory<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> resistance genes are <strong>of</strong> prime importance.<br />
